Eco-Congregation Scotland is a Christian environmental organisation which helps local churches address environmental issues through their life and mission. There are over 400 eco-congregations of different denominations in Scotland. Renfield St Stephen’s Church has been registered as an Eco-Congregation since 2015, and has been a Fairtrade place of worship since 2014.
In September 2017 we were awarded our first Eco-Congregation Award, and in the spring of 2018 received the Bronze Award. The plaque was presented to us on 20th May by our local MP, Alison Thewliss, during an event in the church patio to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Glasgow Garden Festival, part of Glasgow Wildlife Garden Festival 2018 with RSPB.
In achieving these awards we have been commended for the extent to which care for the earth has been integrated into the worship of the congregation, contacts developed with local groups, with Christian Aid and with a project in India, involving different groups in the congregation including the BB, Sunday School and The Guild in environmental issues, and for the ongoing programme to replace lights in the church and halls with LEDs, along with secondary glazing.
