Worship

Our worship in this beautiful gothic revival church is a blend of traditional styles, but sometimes we add a twist of something new.  Services start at 11am and last about an hour.  With involvement of a variety of musicians, and a small choir no two Sundays are the same.  There is often a significant level of participation for everyone.  The preaching programme is generally structured around the Revised Common Lectionary readings, with diversions into other themes or areas of the Bible.  Children and young people begin with their own activities in Sunday School and then join us for worship for the last part of the service.  There is a small crèche.  As some of our congregation travel into town each Sunday we have tea, coffee and juice following the service – an opportunity to meet and welcome.

In the four months of the year where there are five Sundays, we join with our neighbouring congregation at Anderston Kelvingrove Parish Church either worshipping in our sanctuary or at their sanctuary at 759 Argyle Street Glasgow G3 8DS on the fifth Sunday.

On the third Sunday of the month we offer a menu of worship styles, adults are invited to gather in the Sanctuary, where they can worship God in a more traditional setting, hear the word of God, share in relevant preaching and explore the complex issues of being a Christian in today’s world.

As an alternative choice, children (and their parents) are invited to The Chapel where worship is designed to be appropriate for all ages, with particular care given to offering ways for children to participate. The style is creative and interactive, with an emphasis on worship rather than teaching. You can see some of our service in the RSS gallery.

We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who love Jesus Christ and come seeking his grace and help.

We celebrate Holy Communion monthly on the second Sunday of each month.  In February, April, June, August, October and December the Sacrament of Communion is part of our morning worship.  Children and young people join those already in church for Communion, and receive bread and grapes at their own table, at the same time as the rest of the congregation serve each other with bread and wine.  We serve non-alcoholic wine and gluten-free bread.

In January, March, May, July, September and November Holy Communion is celebrated as part of a more informal, separate, service at 12.15pm in the chancel of the sanctuary.  This shorter celebration of Holy Communion is open to all ages who love Jesus Christ and come seeking his grace.

We celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday jointly with neighbouring churches.

Every Wednesday at 1pm we hold a half hour service in St Matthew’s Chapel, next door to the sanctuary.  The atmosphere is relaxed, and services are usually simple - a couple of hymns, prayers and a short talk.  Wednesday lunchtime worship does not take place during July and August.

We celebrate the major Christian festivals of Easter and Christmas with a 7am service in the open air in Blythswood Square Gardens followed by breakfast in the café.  During Holy Week we have special services at 1pm or 7pm on different days.  At Christmas we have Christmas Eve Watchnight worship at 11.30pm preceded by mulled wine (non-alcoholic) and warm mince pies and on Christmas Day we worship in Adelaide Place Baptist Church for an all-age service at 10.30am.  We give thanks for harvest in late September/early October and commemorate Remembrance in November.

Friday@11

For as long as anyone can remember, a group of local Christians has met here on Friday mornings to pray.  We pray for each other, we pray about what goes on in Renfield St Stephens, we pray for sisters and brothers in Christ.  We pray for Glasgow and its people, we pray for troubled places of the world.  We pray for people who ask us to pray for them; a tree made out of fence wire in the foyer of Renfield St Stephen’s Church Centre invites people to write prayer requests on leaves, fix them to the tree, and we pray for them each week.  We pray for peace, and our prayer times have often been blessed with a wonderful, surprising sense of Christ’s peace-giving presence

We pray trusting in God’s love in Jesus Christ, not in our own words.  We pray because Jesus told us to go to a quiet place, to ask as our Father knows what we are seeking before we even speak.

All are welcome to join us at 11am on Friday mornings.
